Ayurvastra betekent letterlijk gezondheidskleding. Het gezonde slaat vooral
op het feit dat voor het verven van de textiel gebruik wordt gemaakt van
dezelfde kruiden die verwerkt worden in ayurvedische geneesmiddelen. De
textiel krijgt door het verven met de ayurvedische kruidenmix een
gezondheids-bevorderende werking. Door de textiel te dragen neem je de
geneeskrachtige kruiden tot je: via de poriën dringen de werkzame stoffen
het lichaam binnen. Omdat de huid het grootste orgaan is, is dit een
efficiënte manier van toedienen. Nicotinepleisters werken ook zo, echter
bevat het giftige stoffen natuurlijk.
Ayurvastra bestaat ruim 5000 jaar. Het werd vooral gebruikt om de
kleding van de Koninklijke familie te verven. Door de industriële revolutie
en nadien de toestroom van textiel uit de goedkope landen als China, raakte
het in de vergetelheid. Een paar jaar geleden werden per toeval de recepten
voor de mixen ontdekt en in gebruik genomen. Met succes. Behalve in India
sloeg Ayurvastra ook aan Amerika, een aantal Europese landen en het
Middenoosten. Dit komt mede door het besef dat de reguliere textiel voor
minimaal de helft uit gif bestaat. Gif dat via de poriën ons lichaam
binnendringt.
Binnen Ayuvastra kun je een tweedeling maken van wellbeing textiel en
textiel dat werkt tegen specifieke klachten zoals eczeem, psoriasas, astma,
artritis. De wellbeing textiel kan o.a. gebruikt worden om het immuunsysteem
te verhogen, te ontspannen en om beter te slapen.
Aurvastra is een en al handwerk dat begint bij het plukken van de kruiden in
de ayurvedische kruidentuinen. De geheel organische textiel wordt gebleekt
met urine van de Indiase oerkoe. Behalve dat dit in tegenstelling tot
normale bleekmiddelen niet schadelijk is voor mens en milieu heeft het ook
een antibacteriële en werkt het tegen schimmels. Na het bleken wordt de
textiel een flink aantal uur gedompeld in een grote pot met een kokende mix
van kruiden, bloemen en blaadjes. Daarna wordt het op het gras gelegd om te
drogen.
Vaak bevat de gebruikte mix meer dan 40 verschillende kruiden.
Kruiden die de textiel niet alleen hun kleur maar ook de specifieke heilzame
werking geven. De textiel werkt het best als het lichaam rust. Bijvoorbeeld
tijdens meditatie en slaap.
In 2005 heeft de Indiase overheid onderzoek laten uitvoeren naar de werking
van de Ayurvedische textiel. Uit het onderzoek bleek dat Ayurvastra vooral
werkt bij huidgerelateerde klachten maar ook, en dat was verrassend, bij
astma en artritis.
Ayurvastra kan het best op lage temperatuur met en organisch wasmiddel
gewassen worden. Zolang de textiel zijn kleur heeft, heeft het zijn
werking.

Introduction to Ayurvastra
Ayur vastra clothing is made from organic cotton , silk, wool, jute, coir
fabric that has been permeated with special (Ayurvedic) herbs and oils that
promote health and cure special diseases depending upon the blends of
embedded herbs and oils.
Ayurvastra, as a branch of ayurveda which have been practiced in India
,Ayurvastra been hand loomed or power loomed, without chemical additives to
prepare the fibers for clothing, Ayurvastra can be made in dark and light
shades of red, yellow, green, blue, orange, brown, Ivory black. More than 20
shades are created for ayurvastra fabrics.
Development of Ayurvastra Concept.
Globally, many countries have been enforcing ban on textiles that have been
colored using chemical dyes because of various health hazards so alternative
textiles dyed using natural vegetable dyes, especially medicinal plants,
have been commanding a huge market.
K. Ravi, former adviser, Common Wealth Secretariat, London, submitted this
novel idea of Ayurvedic clothes as a project before the Central Planning
Ayurveda College, aimed at creating a niche for the eco-friendly handloom
fabric It was thus ayurvastra was included in the Additional Central
Government Assistance Scheme and entrusted for implementation to the State
Department of Handlooms and Textiles, with assistance for research and
development. It was as part of this project that the Dravyaguna department
of Ayurveda College started work on creating Ayurvastra.
Ayurvastra Clothes have been backed up by
clinical trials at the Government Ayurveda College in Thiruvanathapuram,
southern India.The college claims the trials were successful for 40 patients
with rheumatism, allergies, hypertension, diabetes, psoriasis and other skin
ailments. It is believed the healing properties of the
herb-and-spice-infused clothes enter the skin and relieve the patient from
the diseases.
